Verstappen shares first thoughts after daughters birth

Max Verstappen has shared his first thoughts since becoming a father this week, describing the arrival of his newborn daughter Lily as “very special” and “very enjoyable,” as he stepped back into the Formula 1 paddock for the Miami Grand Prix.

The reigning World Champion skipped Thursday’s media obligations to remain in Europe with his partner Kelly Piquet, who gave birth to their baby girl earlier this week.

The Dutchman arrived in Miami late Thursday night, having spent a few precious days with his better half and their baby girl, Lily.

“Luckily, I got to spend a few days with them once she was born,” Verstappen told ESPN. “It’s been great. You never really know what to expect but it’s been very enjoyable and very special.”

The birth of Lily marks Verstappen’s first child and the couple’s first together. Piquet, daughter of three-time World Champion Nelson Piquet, is already a mother to five-year-old Penelope, whom she shares with former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat.

Asked whether he’s had to study up on parenting, Verstappen revealed he already has some precious experience and training under his belt from his relationship with Penelope.

“I’m kind of like a bonus dad already with my girlfriend having a daughter, so I saw her grow up since she was one,” he said, reflecting warmly on his role in the young girl’s life.

And while Verstappen is known for his competitive edge on the racetrack – and his passion for gaming off it – he seemed confident about balancing fatherhood with his hobbies.

“I think that will work out. Who knows, maybe in the future we can do it together. Everyone does it [parenting] in their own way … it will all work out.”

As Verstappen hit the track on Friday for Miami’s sole practice session, his mind was undoubtedly split between Red Bull’s new floor upgrade and the tiny hands waiting back home.

But ultimately, it will be business as usual this weekend in Florida where the 27-year-old will resume his chase for a fifth world title, and his first win as a father.
