Evans mayor to host town hall discussing potential property tax increases

Evans Mayor Mark Clark will host a town hall to discuss a potential ballot measure that would increase property taxes at 6 p.m. Thursday in the banquet room of the Evans Community Complex, 1100 37th St.

All Evans residents are encouraged to attend.

At their last city council work session, the Evans City Council reviewed recent polling data collected by Magellan Strategies to ascertain public support for a ballot measure that would raise the mill levy by 11.96 mills to 15.49 mills from its current 3.53 mills. If passed, property taxes in Evans would be raised to $15.49 for every $1,000 of assessed home value.

This proposed ballot measure revolves around the city’s quickly approaching budget deficit, which indicates that city costs will exceed revenue by 2028. Despite this worry, the data showed that only 46% of the 379 voters surveyed would support the tax increase, while 39% stated that they would not and 15% indicated they were undecided.

Councilwoman Alicia Johnson was outspoken against the proposed ballot measure, encouraging a more thoughtful approach that wouldn’t adversely affect residents who are struggling financially. However, the council believes it would be possible to sway the 15% of residents who are undecided to get the measure passed and stave off the approaching financial deficit.

This town hall will be Clark’s first attempt at rallying support for the ballot measure. Clark will discuss the reason behind the mill levy adjustment and the anticipated financial impact on property owners. After the presentation, Clark will accept questions about the ballot measure.
