The Kansas City Chiefs may have struck gold in this year’s draft.
Specifically, with their selection of Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals as the 133rd pick in the fourth round.
Many national media outlets, such as NBC Sports and CBS Sports, are calling Royals one of the biggest steals of the entire draft.
And that most certainly has to excite Patrick Mahomes, knowing that he has a new explosive weapon to play with.
The shifty 6′ 0” 205 lb wide receiver was projected to go as high as the second round, so falling all the way to the fourth round to Kansas City may come as a blessing in disguise for Royals.
He now gets to play with the best quarterback in the league, in an offense that he can excel in.
And he’s looking forward to joining such a winning organization.
“Man, that culture over there, that winning culture (excites me),” Royals told the Deseret News.
“They’ve been to the Super Bowl many times and won many times too. I just know walking into that I need to be about my business, lock in and embrace the Kansas City culture.”
Royals knows he’s going to have to put his head down and work.
He walks into a wide receiver room that consists of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, along with veterans JuJu Smith-Schuster and Nikko Remigio.
He is going to have to earn his keep.
Mahomes will head into the 2025 season with plenty of weaponsGetty Royals will be hoping to make an immediate impact as a rookieGetty“I took a backseat (at Utah State) when I got there,” Royals said.
“I grew and grew and got better as a person and as a player. And when my chance came up I took full opportunity of it, embraced it and made the most of it.
“I feel like when you get to the NFL it is kind of similar. You’re going to the league, and you’re fresh, new, and know you’re behind some great players.
“And whenever your opportunity arrives, whether it’s on special teams or even in practice, you just have to embrace it and come to it.
It sounds like Royals has a good attitude and an understanding of what he is walking into.
But don’t be fooled; Royals wants to contribute right away.
“I just want to prove I belong,” Royals said.
“I worked so hard to get here and I just want to stay in the NFL.
“I want to show the team that I belong here and that I can continue to up my game and get better.”
Royals is going to get his opportunity to find a role in the offense next to Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
Whether he takes full advantage of the opportunity remains to be seen.
But if he does, then the rest of the 31 teams will look back and ask themselves how they let Royals fall into Kansas City’s lap
