Six Flags Shutters Iconic Theme Park After 50 Years of Operation

Next to Disney and Universal Studios, few theme park companies remain as universally recognizable as Six Flags. With park locations spanning across the U.S., Six Flags has become one of the most reliable venues for thrill-ride seekers anywhere in the country.

Unfortunately, not even Six Flags is free from the financial strains of outside economic developments. In a recent announcement that has devastated the company's loyal fans, the globally renowned theme park company has officially announced that they'll be permanently closing Six Flags America later this year.

Opening its doors in the summer of 1974, Six Flags America quickly became one of the most beloved theme parks along the East Coast, delighting anyone who ventured to the 500-acre property in Woodmore, Maryland.

Located just outside Washington, D.C., Six Flags America and its adjoining Hurricane Harbor water park has offered a fun-filled day of thrills and chills to all those who visited the nation's capital. Sadly, Six Flags' executive have recently chosen to sell off the property for land development once the park concludes its operational season on November 2, 2025.

In the formal statement announcing the park's upcoming closure, Six Flags CEO Richard A. Zimmerman revealed the decision came after careful consideration of the corporation's nationwide properties.

"As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company's long-term growth plan," Zimmerman said.

"This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it will have on our Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor park associates and guests," Zimmerman went on to say. "We are grateful to our park associates who work hard to create lifelong memories for our guests."

To compensate for the park's closure, Six Flags will pay out severance packages to Six Flag America's 70 full-time employees.
