Canelo Alvarez names British opponent as easiest fight of career

Canelo Alvarez insists his easiest night as a professional came against Rocky Fielding.

The Mexican superstar admitted as much during a quick-fire social media interview with boxing broadcaster Dan Canobbio.

Asked who his easiest fight was, Canelo paused for a moment before picking ‘Rocky From Stocky’.

Canelo squared off against Fielding at New York’s Madison Square Garden in December 2018.

Fielding entered the contest as the WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion but had the lesser world title snatched from him in emphatic fashion.

The Liverpudlian got dropped in each of the first two rounds with body shots before a thudding right to the chin sent him tumbling to the canvas for a third time in round three.

When Fielding made his way back to his feet, the referee, Ricky Gonzalez, warned him that one more knockdown would signal the end of the fight.

And true to his word, Gonzalez stepped in and waved off the contest after Fielding was dropped by another sweeping left to the body moments later.

According to the CompuBox punch stats, Fielding landed just 37 of 183 blows (30%), while Canelo found a home for 73 of 141 (52%).

In the immediate aftermath, Fielding was incredibly critical of his performance.

But in reality, Canelo was simply too good for the brave Liverpudlian.

“He’s an elite fighter, you know,” said Fielding “I went in there trying my best, and that’s what elite fighters are like.

“The body shots were more like the wind was getting took, so he placed the shots well.

“I stood there too long. I thought I could try to mix it with him when I shouldn’t have.

“Again, as I said, you see the height of me compared to him, I should have kept it long, but I just stood there with someone who’s elite and who’s stronger, and he caught me.

“I gave it everything, and the better man won.

“I dared to be great, I lived a dream. I’ll come again, I’ll come back.

“Hats off to Canelo. He’s a great fighter, I respect him. I’ll come back.”

Fielding boxed four more times after losing to Canelo.

A trio of stoppage wins over unheralded opposition led to a British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight title fight against Dan Azeez.

He was subsequently stopped in the eighth round, thus signalling the end of a 33-fight (30-3) career that included a win over John Ryder and losses to Callum Smith and Canelo.
