Racist remarks caught on video at East Bay high school baseball game

(KRON) -- A cell phone video shot at Albany High School captures baseball players from the opposing team yelling out racist remarks.

Pinole police probe viral video of racist rant as hate incident

The video was recorded on April 23 during a baseball game between Albany and Pinole Valley high schools.

Players from Pinole Valley called Asian players "P.F. Chang," after the Chinese restaurant chain. They then started chanting "Baljeet," an Indian character from the Disney show "Phineas and Ferb."

Albany parents say their kids were locked into the game and didn't notice the remarks at the time but are appalled at what they call "blatant racism" and "discrimination."

"It's not acceptable behavior by any means, particularly in this community of ours, in the Bay Area," says parent Mattison Ly. "I just don't think in this day is tolerable."

"Understanding that their words and actions and intentions have serious real-world consequences, beyond which they can even understand," says parent Jason Turvow. "It hits heavy on this side of the field."

Eugene Lee is the father of one of the targeted players. He wants Pinole Valley High School to hold their students responsible and cut their season short.

"It sends the right message," Lee says. "It means if you cross that line and you bring hate onto the field, you don't get to take the field. Any action that happens after the season that doesn't impact the current team in the current season is largely irrelevant."

Parents from other schools say this wasn't an isolated incident, recounting a previous incident at a game at nearby El Cerrito High School.

"Called derogatory terms, both racist and homophobic and it is just unnecessary," says parent Anatalio Ubalde. "This is a game that should be played on the field. Those things don't need to be part of it. It's a fun and beautiful game."

The superintendent of Albany Unified School District sent out a district-wide e-mail saying that they've filed several complaints and spoke with Pinole Valley High School's principal and athletic director.

However, some parents like Lee want to see stronger consequences.

"If we normalize that kind of language and that kind of behavior on the field, it's just going to escalate," says Lee.

KRON4 reached out to the West Contra Costa School District for their response but did not hear back in time for this report.
