Jury convicts man of attempted murder for injuring child in San Leandro shooting

OAKLAND — A 34-year-old man is facing nearly 40 years behind bars for firing a gun into a San Leandro home and injuring a 4-year-old boy last year, according to prosecutors.

On Wednesday, a jury convicted Adam Abraham Johnson on two counts of attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, two counts of assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said.

The shooting happened on Feb. 24, 2024, after Johnson tracked a vehicle he had reported stolen to the driveway of a residence in the 400 block of West Juana Street.

Johnson fired his semi-automatic handgun at the person he believed had stolen his car, as well as multiple rounds at a window of the home, according to prosecutors.

A 4-year-old boy who was sitting on a couch in the living room was struck by the gunfire. He was taken to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where he was treated for his injuries.

“We are grateful that the bullet that struck this innocent victim did not take this child’s life,” District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson said in a statement. “Mr. Johnson, as a convicted felon, should never have had the gun that he used in the first place.”

“His actions in taking the law into his own hands were completely inappropriate and almost led to the death of an innocent child,” Dickson added. “The message needs to be clear that if you use a gun, you will be prosecuted, and you will be punished accordingly.”

Prosecutors said Johnson faces an increased sentence — up to 39½ years in state prison — because of a prior robbery conviction, his use of a firearm in the commission of the attempted murder and the infliction of great bodily injury on the child.

Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11 at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
