The Toronto Maple Leafs finally finished off the Ottawa Senators on their third chance to end the series, winning 4-2 in Game 6 on Thursday at Canadian Tire Centre to book a spot in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Toronto’s Max Pacioretty broke a 2-2 tie at 14:21 of the third period. It was Pacioretty’s first goal since Dec. 20.
William Nylander sealed it with an empty-netter for his second of the game on his 29th birthday.
The Leafs, who had lost 13 of 14 potential closeout games since 2018 heading into Thursday’s action, will now face the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in Round 2.
The Leafs also won yet another Battle of Ontario. Toronto beat the Senators four times in the playoffs from 2000-04.
Auston Matthews scored a power-play goal late in the first before Nylander scored 43 seconds into the second to give Toronto a 2-0 lead on Thursday.
Brady Tkachuk cut the deficit in half midway through the second before David Perron tied it at 12:40 of the third.
