For 70-plus minutes against the defending champion Orlando Pride, Angel City seemed in control with a two-goal lead.
Then the champions did what champions do, rallying with three goals in less than 25 minutes to steal the win and three points.
“What we did for 70 minutes against probably one of the most dynamic front lines in the league with Barbra Banda, Marta and Ally Watt coming off the bench was amazing,” Angel City interim coach Sam Laity said. “Unfortunately, what we didn’t do is defend the most important area of the goal, which was the space four yards in front of the six-yard box.
The 3-2 loss in Orlando serves as another reminder and learning experience for the young Angel City (2-2-2, eight points) group.
“For so long in that game, there were so many positives and there still are so many positives to take out of it,” defender and captain Sarah Gorden said. “I thought our back line and our team defense was so dominant.
“As a captain, it’s hard for me because I look at the first goal and I know that I could have done better on it. It changed the momentum of the game. I wear that responsibility as a captain and as a veteran player.
“In a 3-2 loss, it’s weird to have that much hope and excitement about what this young team will be going forward. It’s not the first time that we’ve lost late in Orlando, but it’s weird that there’s so many positives after a loss, but there truly are. “
The next challenge comes Friday against the other half of the last season’s NWSL championship game. The Washington Spirit (4-2, 12 points) will host the 5 p.m. PT game but will not have Trinity Rodman, who is out due to a back injury.
“We’re on this difficult stretch, and that’s how our league works,” Gorden said. “You leave home for 10 days at a time and play multiple away games.
“We’re going to be facing a really difficult Washington team, but we really like how we will match up against them as far as our formation and their formation. (The key) is taking the things from last week and putting together a 90-plus-minute performance.”
Angel City will return home to face the Utah Royals on May 9.
Top rookie honor for Tiernan
Riley Tiernan earned Rookie of the Month honors for April. Tiernan, who was a non-roster invitee to training camp, scored three goals in six games.
She signed a two-year contract through 2026 with an option for 2027 before the start of the season.
Straus doubles up
Alexander Straus, who will take over as Angel City’s coach starting June 1, led Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title last week.
Thursday, he led the club to the DFB-Pokal championship with a 4-2 win over Werder Bremen.
