Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen has had a great time visiting New York this season.
Through two starts in the Big Apple, Gallen has thrown 12.2 innings with one earned run, as he clocked in a six-inning gem in a 4-2 win Thursday at the New York Mets.
Gallen allowed one run on only two hits through six innings. He consistently attacked the strike zone and struck out eight batters, his most since punching out 13 Yankees last month.
He struck out the side in the fourth inning during a stretch of eight straight retired batters. Gallen never faced a situation with multiple runners aboard or even a runner in scoring position, as Juan Soto’s solo shot represented the only damage done.

This has been an inconsistent season for Gallen so far, as he entered Thursday with a gaudy 5.57 ERA, but Thursday was a reminder of his caliber when clicking. The knuckle curve was nasty and drew six whiffs on 11 swings.
Shelby Miller takes on closer role vs. Mets
With Justin Martinez hitting the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation before the game, Shelby Miller was tasked with closing the door.
Miller entered the ninth inning with a 4-2 lead and tossed a stress-free, 1-2-3 inning for his fourth career save.
The Diamondbacks (17-14) secured a series victory over the Mets (21-11) at Citi Field for the first time since 2017. The last time they won a three-game set in Queens was back in 2016.
Arizona’s offense faced the challenging Kodai Senga to start Thursday’s game, who came in with a 1.26 ERA.
Senga only allowed one run through four innings, but the D-backs made him work and got him out early. He threw 87 pitches, walking three batters and striking out six, many with the daunting ghost fork. He stranded the bases loaded in back-to-back innings, including a deep fly ball from Corbin Carroll that Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo tracked down at the wall.
Off New York’s bullpen, the D-backs tacked on. Eugenio Suarez hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Geraldo Perdomo slammed a solo shot in the seventh. Perdomo has five home runs already after hitting three last year and a career-high six in 2023.
Soto hit his second long ball of the game in the eighth inning off Kevin Ginkel, but the Diamondbacks’ bullpen otherwise came up clutch. Ginkel held onto a 3-2 lead by striking out back-to-back hitters to strand runners on second and third in his second game back from the IL.
Tim Tawa added another insurance run in the ninth inning with his fifth home run.
Diamondbacks next game
The Diamondbacks head to Philadelphia to begin a three-game set at the Phillies starting on Friday at 3:45 p.m.
Merrill Kelly starts (4.41 ERA) opposite of Phillies left-hander Jesus Luzardo (1.73 ERA).
The game will air on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
