DENVER (KDVR) — On Thursday, Nicholas Karol-Chik was sentenced to 45 years in the Department of Corrections after he pleaded guilty in 2024 for the deadly rock-throwing incident that killed 20-year-old Alexa Bartell.
Karol-Chik pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree and crime of violence in May 2024. During his plea, the judge said Karol-Chik would receive the ultimate sentence possible, which is between 35-72 years, as opposed to a life sentence.
On Thursday morning, Karol-Chik was sentenced to 45 years in the Department of Corrections.
3 charged in deadly rock-throwing spree
On the night of April 19, 2023, three high school students were throwing large landscaping rocks at passing cars. Bartell was driving in Jefferson County when a rock went through her windshield, hitting her in the head and killing her.
The three 18-year-olds were charged, and in the span of two years, all either pleaded guilty or were found guilty by a jury for their roles in the deadly incident.
Karol-Chik was sitting in the front seat of the truck when the deadly rock was thrown. He testified against Joseph Koenig, the one who threw the rock, in court. Koenig was ultimately found guilty of first-degree murder, along with 18 additional charges, by a jury in April.
