Man accused of Greeley laundromat stabbing to undergo mental evaluations

A man accused of fatally stabbing another man last year at a laundromat in the Greeley Mall will undergo a pair of evaluations to determine his mental condition ahead of a still-unscheduled trial.

At an arraignment Wednesday, 40-year-old Michael Vergara’s defense team requested he be sent to the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo to undergo an evaluation for insanity and a mental health evaluation.

Weld District Judge Timothy Kerns approved the request and scheduled a review hearing for Aug. 20, though he admitted he doesn’t expect to have results from either evaluation by then.

“I don’t think we’re going to get anything in 90 days,” Kerns said. “But I’m happy to meet to see if they are requiring anything else or if there’s anything we can do to grease the wheels and get things moving.”

Vergara’s case dates back to March 24, 2024, when police say he called officers on himself from a nearby church after fatally stabbing Will Brown, 36, at the Greeley Mall laundromat.

Police reviewed security camera footage from the laundromat, which they say showed Vergara charging at Brown, leading to a struggle that ended with Vergara stabbing Brown several times.

Vergara later told police he believed Brown was an informant for corrupt officers with the Greeley Police Department and that Brown had tried to “rob” his car a few years prior at the direction of those officers.

Vergara will next appear in Weld District Court at the Aug. 20 review hearing.
