The Patriots announced the release of long snapper Joe Cardona.

The 33-year-old has been with the team ever since being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He is a US Naval Reserve officer and was a four-year starter in college for the Midshipmen.

Cardona was part of the New England Patriots side that went to three straight Super Bowls between 2016 and 2018.

He won Super Bowl LI in Houston, Texas and Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Georgia on Bill Belichick’s team.

During his off days as a rookie, Cardona worked 24-hour shifts as a Command Duty Officer.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 2019 with a special ceremony held at the Patriots’ Gillette Stadium.

The 33-year-old won the NFL’s Salute to Service award in February 2024.

He was named a Patriots captain for the first time in his career for the 2024 season.

And Cardona is a member of the New England Patriots All-Dynasty Team.

He played 157 games during his career in New England as part of one of the greatest dynasties sports has ever seen.

New England won six Super Bowls under Belichick and with Brady at quarterback.

Their new head coach Mike Vrabel was a player in three of those victories.

And fans weren’t happy with the move to part ways with a franchise icon.

“Nah that’s messed up,” one wrote.

“He was one of the guys you didn’t touch.”

Another said, “Thanks for all you did on and off the field.”

    A third posted, “I’m heartbroken.”

While a fourth commented, “Damn, cut throat business.”

New England made the move just days after their surprise NFL Draft selection.

The team picked Vanderbilt long snapper Julian Ashby in the seventh round.

That ultimately spelt the end for Cardona’s career, and the Patriots dynasty.
