Yuzvendra Chahal finally broke his silence on a hot topic: why he’s been underused by the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025 season after taking a record-breaking hat-trick against Chennai Super Kings on April 30 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
For the fifth time in the ongoing IPL 2025, Yuzvendra Chahal didn’t finish his full quota of overs, as he could bowl only three overs against the Chennai Super Kings, which raised many eyebrows. Despite bowling only 18 balls, Chahal finished with the incredible figures of 4/32 against the CSK.
After helping Punjab Kings beat CSK by four wickets in the 49th IPL 2025 game on Wednesday, Chahal revealed that he hadn’t had any conversation with the PBKS captain, Shreyas Iyer, regarding his underuse in the tournament.

Instead, the star leg-spinner said that he simply trusted the team’s strategy while quietly regaining his rhythm as he had a shaky start to the season. But Chahal’s self-belief and experience became his biggest weapons, proving his doubters wrong in sensational style.
Yuzvendra Chahal said after the match during his conversation with Jatin Sapru, Harbhajan Singh, and RP Singh on the Cricket Live show: “No. The captain is planning accordingly. In the beginning, I wasn't doing so well. I wasn't in the rhythm. But when I got that confidence... Because whenever I talk to Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), he always tells me to bowl the way I bowl.”
I’m not the kind of bowler who saves himself: Chahal
He credited his comeback to conversations with the former players like Harbhajan Singh, who pushed him to remind himself of the bowler he truly is, fearless, attacking, and never one to play safe. And that’s how he stunned CSK. Chahal now has 13 wickets in 10 games so far this season.
Chahal signed off by saying, “I’m not the kind of bowler who bowls every ball fast or to save himself. And when the seniors tell me that I've played so much, one thing I remember is that I have to make a comeback. I've played so much. I shouldn't forget what I've done. That's all.”
Yuzi Chahal on Jatin’s show revealed he discussed with Shreyas Iyer about not getting his full 4-over quota in 5 IPL matches. Yuzi admitted his early bowling wasn't up to par. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal added another feather to his IPL legacy with a stunning four-wicket over against Chennai Super Kings, as he achieved multiple records in the process. He became the first bowler in IPL history to take four wickets in an over twice.

Before this, only Amit Mishra (in 2013) and Andre Russell (in 2022) had done it once. Chahal's latest spell was the first hat-trick of the ongoing IPL 2025. This wasn’t just any hat trick—it was the first-ever hat trick against CSK in IPL history. Interestingly, the very first hat-trick in the IPL was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji for CSK, also against Punjab Kings, in 2008.
Yuzvendra Chahal becomes the player with the most four-wicket hauls in IPL
Now, Balaji and Chahal are the only two players to claim IPL hat-tricks at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Additionally, Chahal has also joined an elite list of bowlers with multiple IPL hat-tricks. He now stands alongside Amit Mishra (3) and Yuvraj Singh (2).
The leg-spinner is already the leading wicket-taker in IPL history and now also holds the record for the most four-wicket hauls in the league with nine, surpassing Sunil Narine (8) and Lasith Malinga (7). In another feat, Chahal has now taken 10 wickets in the 19th over of IPL matches — the second-most for a spinner. Only Sunil Narine is ahead of the leg-spinner with 12 wickets.
