The Arizona Diamondbacks were in a real bind during the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 4-3 win at the New York Mets.
Leading 4-1 fresh off scoring a pair of insurance runs, all eyes were on Justin Martinez for the save. Martinez’s velocity was noticeably lower during his last outing as he’s dealt with “shoulder fatigue,” and that trend continued.
Martinez — whose sinker velocity was down to 95.5 mph from his average of 99.6 mph — failed to record an out in the ninth inning on Wednesday. Tyrone Taylor hit a solo shot, and Martinez walked Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. Ryan Thompson entered to rescue the win and beaned Pete Alonso to load the bases, still with no outs.
Thompson managed to free himself from the underwater box by striking out Mark Vientos and inducing a pair of groundouts. The D-backs evened the series at Citi Field and finished the first 30 games of the season above .500 at 16-14.
Diamondbacks starter Corbin Burnes overcame five walks to earn his first win of the season. Burnes allowed one run in six innings of work despite the traffic.
Pinch hitter Geraldo Perdomo drove in the go-ahead runs on a two-run single in the seventh inning, and he delivered a critical sacrifice fly in the ninth to take that 4-1 lead.

Burnes quickly found himself in a situation, as Lindor led off the first inning with a double. Burnes walked two batters with one out, but he struck out Starling Marte swinging at a slider away and escaped.
The lone Mets run off Burnes came from a Vientos solo shot in the third inning on a cutter than hung over the middle. From there, Burnes allowed one single and two walks.
He finished with 94 pitches.
Even without being his sharpest, Burnes’ ERA over his last four starts is 2.70 with three quality starts. He has not been quite dominant with 17 strikeouts and 10 walks, but he’s kept the Diamondbacks in this stretch of games.

The Diamondbacks did not give him any run support through six innings, as New York’s unconventional pitching strategy worked out.
The Mets opened with reliever Huascar Brazoban and then handed the ball to left-hander Brandon Waddell, his first MLB appearance since 2021.
Waddell pitched in Korea and China over the past three years and made the most of his reintroduction to the big leagues.
He shut out the Diamondbacks through 4.1 innings, retiring his final eight hitters and walking off to a standing ovation from a Mets crowd that just met him.
The Diamondbacks finally got something going when he exited in the seventh. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Jorge Barrosa delivered back-to-back hits off right-hander Ryne Stanek, with Barrosa hitting a broken-bat double.
Perdomo came off the bench and fell behind 0-2, but he inside-outed a 99 mph heater into left field to score both runners.

Gabriel Moreno started the ninth-inning rally with a walk, followed by a Gurriel double off former D-backs reliever Chris Devenski. Jorge Barrosa and Perdomo hit back-to-back sac flies.
Diamondbacks having trouble hitting lefties
The Diamondbacks have not found much success against southpaws this season. Against righties, the D-backs entered Wednesday with an .814 OPS as a team, the highest in the National League and second highest in MLB behind the Yankees.
Against lefties, that OPS was .653.
Not having Ketel Marte since early April — he could be back as soon as Friday at the Philadelphia Phillies — is a factor. Left-handed sluggers Corbin Carroll, Josh Naylor and Pavin Smith (platoon) all have much better numbers against righties while some of Arizona’s right-handed boppers, such as Gurriel and Moreno, have yet to find a rhythm offensively.
Mets southpaw David Peterson worked five innings with one earned run to earn a win on Tuesday, although he greatly benefitted from exceptional defense behind him.
The Phillies this weekend will start a pair of left-handers, including Ranger Suarez off the injured list, per The Athletic’s Matt Gelb.
Torey Lovullo’s milestone
With the win, manager Torey Lovullo secured his 600th career victory. He is the 124th skipper in MLB history to win 600 games.
Kevin Ginkel returns
The Diamondbacks activated reliever Kevin Ginkel off the injured list on Tuesday, and he made his season debut in a big spot on Wednesday. Lovullo called on Ginkel with a runner on second and two outs with a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Ginkel walked Alonso but rebounded to strike out Vientos and strand the runners.
Jalen Beeks, Ginkel and Shelby Miller accounted for two scoreless innings to bridge Burnes to Martinez.
Diamondbacks next game
