‘Hope is not a strategy’ – 49ers general managers gives rare update on Brock Purdy negotiations

It’s no secret San Francisco’s QB1 is going to get a new deal.

The question remains, how high is general manager John Lynch willing to go?

There’s no question that Brock Purdy has earned a massive raise after being the last pick in the draft three years ago.

Since then, he has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, two NFC championship games and two NFC West titles.

In three seasons, he has a 23-13 record as the starting quarterback in the Bay Area.

Purdy is in the last year of his rookie deal and has a 2025 salary of 5.3 million.

He has been the best bargain in the league for the last couple of years.

But now it’s time for Lynch and the 49ers to pay the piper.

Lynch appeared on Chris Simms’ Unbuttoned podcast on Monday and provided a rare update on the contract negotiations with his star quarterback.

“Yeah, I can tell you, we’ve made it a practice not to talk about negotiations,” Lynch said.

“And that goes way back to when I was playing. I felt like that was my business and I didn’t want the world knowing it. So I’ve always been very sensitive to that.

“But what I will tell you and can tell you is we’re having really good, positive discussions.

“When it gets done, I’m not sure. Hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy.

“So, we’re making progress. We’ve had good discussions.”

In a great sign for the 49ers, Purdy has been in attendance for San Francisco’s voluntary offseason program.

Along with Purdy’s presence, San Francisco also locked down All-Pro tight end George Kittle to a new contract that made him the highest-paid player at his position.

It was a four-year contract extension worth $76.4million.

Now, Purdy is hoping he is next in line.
