‘False Narrative’: Read UNC Head Coach Bill Belichick’s Statement on CBS Interview

Following the airing of an interview on the show ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ this past weekend, UNC football head coach Bill Belichick has issued a statement on what he calls “a false narrative” suggested through the piece.

The interview with CBS’ Tony Dokoupil, which was mostly to promote Belichick’s new book, “The Art of Winning,” touches on Belichick’s history with the game of football.

Toward the end of the piece, Dokoupil asks about Belichick’s relationship with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, noting that Hudson accompanied Belichick to the interview and was overseeing the conversation. When Dokoupil asks how Belichick and Hudson met, Hudson interjects with, “We’re not talking about this.”

Later, TMZ reported Hudson “stormed out of the room” and delayed the shooting of the interview by 30 minutes. The report stated there were several more instances of Hudson stepping in during the conversation, and that a follow-up interview with Belichick was called off due to the interruptions.

Belichick hits back at those reports in his statement, which you can read in full below:

The final eight-minute segment does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative – that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation – which is simply not true.”

The statement was sent out through the university’s Media Relations department Wednesday afternoon. Also attached to the email was a statement from InkWell Management, the publisher of Belichick’s book.

“Getting clicks is easier than getting wins,” the company said. “The segment that was shown to the public veered into a discussion of Bill’s personal life and away from the subject of his book, resulting in a raft of hostile social media posts about his personal life. Bill has written an authoritative and entertaining book about success that should be judged by its contents, not by the clicks generated by the segment.”

Belichick is currently in his first year as the head coach at UNC after being hired in December. He has yet to coach a single game for the Tar Heels and will make his debut on the sidelines September 1 against TCU in Chapel Hill.
