Before he became a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce's career was almost derailed after he was suspended from playing football.
On April 30, the 35-year-old opened up about the impact of the suspension at the time and on the trajectory of his career on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, which he co-hosts with brother Jason Kelce.
During his time at the University of Cincinnati, Travis was suspended from playing football for a year after he failed one of the routine drug tests at the time.
During the draft in 2013, Jason revealed that Travis was picked during the third round and noted Travis " had a few injuries, and then... the marijuana thing stemming from your sophomore year.”
“You probably got drafted an entire round later than you should have,” Jason recalled. "I just think it's funny sometimes looking back and, like, there are all these concerns about Travis Kelce and, like, everybody whoever knew you knew you were a great kid. You just had, like, a mess up with weed. Sorry. And then all of a sudden, like, teams aren't picking you for it."
Jason called out the double standard since many NFL players now openly smoke weed and asked "We're gonna act like this is a death sentence?"
“I'm not condoning smoking weed," Jason continued. "But unless you sign a multimillion-year deal you wanna say ‘f--- you’ to all the people that doubted you because you did smoke weed.”

Travis previously opened up about the suspension on the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast in June 2023 and revealed that the suspension "kicked me into the tight end room.”
"I was still playing QB then," he said. "It was like, ‘Alright, you can come walk on the team, but we don’t need a quarterback. You can just be an athlete on scout team for a year, we’ll figure it out.’ ”
Travis was eventually drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and has played as a tight end over the last 12 years.
