SAN JOSE — Planet Fitness is eyeing a new 24-hour location within a shopping center that commands a prime location along a busy San Jose corridor near the city’s downtown.
The fitness chain has proposed an around-the-clock operation that would replace an electronics store at 1462 Monterey Road, one of the gateways to downtown San Jose a few miles away, plans on file with city officials show.
The proposal arrives at a time when fitness and healthy activity outlets are eyeing or have opened locations in San Jose.
“Planet Fitness provides its members with a simple, no-frills solution for obtaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle,” the fitness company stated in a letter to San Jose city officials. “It does this by creating a judgment-free, stress-free environment so everyone feels welcome and encouraged to get a quick workout.”
The fitness center intends to operate within an existing retail building that totals 12,800 square feet within the Sun Garden Shopping Center near the corner of Monterey Road and East Alma Avenue in San Jose, plannign documents show.
The Planet Fitness site is also a reminder that an array of merchants are seeking locations in the Bay Area that were being left empty by retailers with a shrinking footprint.
Altitude Trampoline Park is taking over a portion of the space of a one-time Walmart store, Hobby Lobby has opened a store at a former Bed Bath and Beyond store, Sports Basement took over a shuttered Barnes & Noble store, and RH, formerly Restoration Hardware, has leased a now-closed Big Lots! store. All of these involve sites in San Jose.
The fitness outlet would operate in a retail space between a Walmart Neighborhood Market store and a Big 5 Sporting Goods store.
“Planet Fitness will include approximately 100 pieces of cardio equipment and 80 pieces of strength conditioning equipment,” the fitness store stated in the planning documents.
The fitness center won’t offer any classes such as spinning, Zumba and yoga. Planet Fitness also doesn’t offer basketball courts, swimming pools, or racquetball.
The future Planet Fitness outlet has been the site of an electronics retailer called Teletron. It wasn’t immediately clear when Planet Fitness hopes to open its new location.
“We understand that most of our members are interested in general fitness and have a limited time to work out,” Planet Fitness stated in the planning files. “We have a 30-minute and a 12-minute circuit to fit their needs.”
