Camila Morrone is reflecting on the impact her new movie, Gonzo Girl, has had on her personal life.
“It’s hard to put into words what Gonzo Girl means to me — both professionally and personally,” Morrone, 27, wrote via Instagram on Monday, April 28. “Back in June 2020, I got an email for an audition. A film directed by Patricia Arquette, starring Willem Dafoe, based on the novel. Two of my absolute favorite actors. My first thought? There’s no way they’d cast me. Surely, they’d go with a big-name actress.”
“But to my complete surprise, Patricia took a chance on me. Off a single self-tape. I remember the call from my agents, 8 am the morning of my birthday. I burst into tears. Even though it took many years to come together, P stood by my side through every twist and turn this project took,” she continued. “On a personal level, I shot this film during one of the lowest times in my life. I just couldn’t find my way back. In many ways, this story—and the support of P and Willem — pulled me out.”
Morrone noted that “anyone who’s ever tried to get an indie film made knows the process is never smooth.”
Leonardo DiCaprio's Complete Dating History
“Now, five years later, here we are—on the brink of release. I’m so proud of this film. I’m endlessly grateful to Patricia for believing in me, trusting me with this opportunity, and becoming a friend and confidant,” she wrote. “All this to say… Gonzo Girl is premiering at @tribecafilmfestival on June 12th in NY and I hope to meet some of you there.”
Morrone, who shared a series of behind-the-scenes snaps from her time on set, said that the second to last photo will “make a lot more sense once you’ve seen the movie.” In the pic, Morrone posed for a selfie while appearing to have a bandage over her head and mascara running down her face.
In the last slide, Morrone filmed herself as she made her bed and appeared to be smoking. “Last side is a snippet of the OG self tape ,” she wrote.
Deadline listed the film as “currently in production” on August 22, 2022 — which was days before Us Weekly exclusively confirmed that she and Leonardo DiCaprio called it quits after four years of dating.
From ‘Titanic’ to an Oscar! Leonardo DiCaprio Through the Years: Photos
“[DiCaprio] has been attending events and going on vacations without [Morrone], from the Care Gala to Unicef Gala to Saint Tropez,” a source revealed to Us at the time. “He has been spending more time hanging out with all his pals like Tobey Maguire and Jamie Foxx.”
While the insider noted that the pair “were very close,” DiCaprio, now 50, and Morrone hadn’t been spotted together since they were in France in July 2022. The source shared that Morrone had been “filming all summer.”
The next year, DiCaprio was romantically linked to Vittoria Ceretti. In November 2023, Us confirmed that the couple are “exclusive.”
