Tre. Charles broke out in 2021 with the dazzling debut single “Stressin” and he’s been a rising star in the Triangle music scene ever since, combining a smooth and soulful style with introspective lyrics about navigating life in a challenging and crisis-laden time. “Here We Are” comes on the heels of his 2024 EP “Currently” – with the latter focusing on songs about time, and the former on songs about place.

“It’s me talking about where I’m at in this moment, in dealing with growing older, and becoming a full-time musician, and how starting a family might play into that – being an adult,” he says. “The place I’m at now, it’s more in transit: I have roots somewhere, but (I’m) touring, and going places, and doing different shows and seeing things – but trying to still stay grounded and rooted.”

All that touring has contributed greatly to Charles’ success as a musician in the last four years – though sometimes, he says, he’s still surprised by it all.

“In the beginning I dealt with imposter syndrome,” he says, “(but) now I’m feeling more in my stride…(knowing) that I’m supposed to be here and I’m supposed to be doing this, because I’m helping people and I’m connecting people and making them think deeper.”

In addition to the new album, Charles is also producing music for a meditation app called Calm – and he’s celebrating the album with a series of spring shows, beginning Tuesday, April 29, at Motorco in Durham. Charles will open for Bartees Strange, starting at 7:30.

And he may not be done releasing music this year either. “I’m working on some other arrangements of these songs,” he says. “Maybe an acoustic album might be coming out.”

Tre. Charles stopped by Live & Local to discuss “Here We Are” and play three tracks: “GRWTH,” “WNDWS,” and “Lately.” Listen:
