Report: Diamondbacks have interest in Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley

The Arizona Diamondbacks have interest in St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, a likely trade candidate, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday.

Arizona has had interest in Helsley dating back to the winter, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported. St. Louis, however, didn’t want to part with an elite closer during the offseason.

Now that the Cardinals are 12-16 having given Helsley just six save opportunities, the willingness to negotiate could change.

On the flip side, the Diamondbacks are 15-13 after Sunday’s win, in which an apparently fatigued Justin Martinez held on for the save after allowing one run.

There have been 13 save opportunities for Arizona this season (tied for third-most in the NL), and it’s blown them five times. The bullpen’s combined ERA of 4.64 is sixth-worst in the NL.

The Philadelphia Phillies could also be in the mix for Helsley’s services, Nightengale noted, but likely not at the cost of their top two prospects.

    Who is Ryan Helsley?

Helsley won NL Reliever of the Year after leading the majors with 49 saves in 2024.

In 10 appearances so far in 2025, he has held opponents scoreless in eight. He gave up two runs in each of the other two outings for an ERA of 3.60.

Two doubles and one home run represent the only extra-base hits he has allowed. Outside of a four-walk outing against the Boston Red Sox, he carries a strikeout-to-walk ratio of eight to four.

Ryan Helsley could ease an ailing Diamondbacks bullpen

A.J. Puk is dealing with elbow inflammation and the team has sought second and third opinions on how to proceed.

Help is on the way, though, as Kevin Ginkel (shoulder) and Kendall Graveman (back) are working back from the injured list, most recently with Ginkel pitching for Reno on Saturday and throwing a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Graveman threw 22 pitches against six batters in an extended spring training game on Saturday.

“(Ginkel) was super excited about his outing. Felt really good through what he did yesterday,” manager Torey Lovullo told reporters before Sunday’s win. “Graveman will continue marching forward on his progression.”

He said the team wasn’t immediately sure of the next steps for Ginkel, meanwhile Graveman will throw in another extended spring game on Tuesday.

Prior to the win on Sunday, Arizona shuffled the bullpen around by optioning Yilber Diaz and calling up Scott McGough. J.P. Feyereisen was designated for assignment.
