The Traitors has become a massive hit for Peacock. The third season of the show debuted as the No. 1 unscripted series across all U.S. platforms, with 500 million minutes watched for the show's first week of release, according to a Peacock press release.
It has already been renewed for a fourth and a fifth season, plus there are international versions going strong in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and dozens of other countries.
But the U.S. version is unique amongst those because for seasons 2 and 3, it has had a cast made up entirely of reality TV stars. The first season was split — half reality TV stars, half "civilians," i.e. people who are not famous (yet).
At a recent TV panel for Deadline's Contenders Television: Documentary Unscripted & Variety event, executive producer Rosy Franks was asked if they would ever consider an all-civilian cast, and she's definitely against that idea.
"I mean, who knows, maybe one day that would be great, wouldn’t it?” Franks said.
Fans are sharply divided about whether or not they think that's a good idea.
"I hope she sees this: PLEASE! The UK version works so f**king well because they *don't* use celebs," wrote one fan on Twitter.
"ik everyone would hate it, but i want it so bad, like honestly loved the first season because it was nice to see people who actually needed the money," wrote another fan.
One fan said that would make the U.S. version "actually watchable" because "all international versions are way better than the U.S. one."
Several fans thought it would work if they did two seasons per year — one that's all celebrities and one that's all civilians.
But just as many fans aren't in favor, citing season 1 as a reason why it won't work.
"No please, god no. There’s a reason the US version is superior," wrote one fan.
Another added, "NOOO them moving too all reality stars literally saved the show."
"Hell no the first season flopped because of the new people," wrote a third, though other fans were quick to point out that that season was half and half, which is why it didn't work.
In season 1, the civilians were sitting ducks for the seasoned reality TV contestants, so a mix is definitely the worst choice. It needs to be all celebrities or all civilians, but not both.
The Traitors will return in 2026 for season 4 and presumably 2027 for season 5, if the pattern holds of releasing the show annually in January.
