The back-and-forth game between the country’s two top teams saw neither side lead by more than two goals. The score was tied 5-5 at the end of the first quarter and 7-7 at halftime, but Boston College outscored Carolina 4-2 in the first 20 minutes of the second half to take its biggest lead of the game at 11-9. It was just the third time all season the Tar Heels had trailed in the second half.
The deficit didn’t last long, as Caroline Godine and Addison Pattillo both scored in a span of 2:10 to knot the game up at 11-11. Less than two minutes later, Marissa White’s 34th goal of the season nosed the Tar Heels back in front, and Kate Levy – the daughter of head coach Jenny Levy – provided a crucial insurance goal at the 3:46 mark. The 4-0 run was the longest by either team all afternoon.
The Eagles scored with 1:13 remaining to close to within a goal, but the Tar Heels won the ensuing draw control and ran out the rest of the clock before Chloe Humphrey slammed the door with another goal with four seconds to go. As a team, UNC controlled eight of the 10 draws in the fourth quarter and 19 of 30 for the game.
Humphrey’s final goal secured yet another hat trick for the redshirt freshman. She’s now recorded hat tricks in 15 of the team’s 18 games this season. Eliza Osburn also finished with three goals, while Marissa White scored twice.
Shots were nearly even: 37 for Boston College against 35 for UNC. The Tar Heels held a strong 28-20 edge in shots on goal. In the Carolina cage, goalie Betty Nelson made eight saves, giving her 17 in her team’s last two games.
UNC’s ACC title is its first since winning six in a row from 2016 through 2022 (the 2020 tournament was not held due to the pandemic) and denies Boston College a three-peat. The program’s eight conference championships are the most of any ACC school.
The Tar Heels are now 18-0 overall and will earn the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field will be announced May 4.
