Greeley firefighters responded about 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning to a large fire that erupted in a commercial building at Ninth Avenue and Second Street.
They were still on the scene as of 11 a.m.
Crews contained the fire to the building in which it started, Deputy Chief Chris Ellmer said, but will likely be on scene in some capacity for the rest of Sunday ensuring the fire is completely out and the scene is safe. The property is the former site of the North Weld Produce Company and is slated to be turned into the StarRise Apartments at North Weld Village.
Ellmer said the department believes the building to be unoccupied, but as of 10:20 a.m., firefighters have not yet been able to search the inside due to safety concerns. Due to those safety concerns, the department anticipates investigators will not be able to determine the cause of the fire Sunday. No responders were injured in the blaze.
Ninth Avenue has been closed in the area since crews arrived, and Ellmer said he expects it to be closed to through traffic for as long as crews are on scene. Residents will have access as needed, he said.
Just after 7 a.m., the Weld County Regional Communications Center sent out an email saying, “Please keep all windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area from a large fire.”
When initial crews arrived, the fire was already burning through the roof of the building, prompting firefighters to put out second and third alarms calling for more help. Crews from Windsor, Evans, Eaton and Platte Valley responded to aid in the efforts, Ellmer said.
“It was a very large body of fire, and they quickly established cutoff points to the buildings around and contained it to the building of origin, which is critical” Ellmer said of the first responders.
