Johnson, 29, is coming off a season with the Nets averaging 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.0% from three. Johnson is one of the best off-ball shooters and playmakers with his perimeter movement, cutting, and spacing. He will play a similar role to Porter in the starting unit with more potential for playmaking in lineups with and without Nikola Jokic.

Almost as important going forward is the salary cap savings in this deal. Porter was slated to earn over $38 million in the 2025-26 season in his role, while Johnson will earn roughly $20.5 million. That is a massive difference with the Nuggets positioned against the second apron and with a looming extension for Christian Braun. It’s one of the reasons why Denver had to relinquish a 2032 first round pick, but that savings may ultimately be a game changer for the Nuggets in the coming years.

In a vacuum, Porter provided similar production to Johnson for the Nuggets last year with 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, shooting 39.5% from three in his own right; however, the Nuggets are betting on Johnson improving next to Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. They are also factoring in Porter’s injury concerns, which include three back surgeries and an expectation for problems in the future.

There are some drawbacks. An unprotected first round pick in 2032 is a very valuable draft pick for Denver. The Stepien rule prevents Denver from making any moves involving first round draft picks in the future. Because it’s the 2032 pick and 2031 pick, the Nuggets will also not have access to their 2033 first rounder next offseason in case they need to make a move.

Ultimately, if this deal is accepted by the medical staff for the Nets, this is a home run move for Denver. Johnson is an awesome player and has the potential to complement Denver’s starting unit exceptionally well for years to come.
