Bournemouth’s European ambitions suffered a blow after conceding a last-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with Manchester United. The Cherries were the better side for much of the game, until Evanilson’s red card with 20 minutes remaining changed the momentum of the contest.

United pressed with the extra man and finally made their dominance count when Rasmus Højlund struck a late equaliser. It will certainly feel like two points dropped for Bournemouth, while United will at least be relieved to halt a two-game losing run.

Antoine Semenyo gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half, punishing United for some careless play out from the back.

André Onana’s square pass to Luke Shaw was easily read, and Shaw’s subsequent ball to Patrick Dorgu was similarly telegraphed. Adam Smith pressed Dorgu into a turnover and immediately whipped a cross into the box, where Evanilson deftly flicked the ball into the path of Semenyo to fire home.

Bournemouth came into the weekend leading the Premier League for shot-ending turnovers (1.9 per game), and they again proved how deadly their pressing game can be.

Semenyo is now just the third Bournemouth player to score both home and away against Manchester United in a Premier League season, following Josh King (2019-20) and Dominic Solanke (2023-24).

United had chances of their own. Alejandro Garnacho squandered a good opportunity when he latched onto a raking through ball from Bruno Fernandes, only to see his attempted lob pushed away by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Semenyo’s goal was the difference at half-time, and he nearly doubled the advantage shortly after the break, curling a left-footed effort just wide from the edge of the box. Moments later, Dango Ouattara rattled the post with a free-kick from a tight angle.

Bournemouth looked to be cruising towards a vital win until Evanilson’s dismissal changed the complexion of the game. The striker slipped into a tackle on Noussair Mazraoui, catching him high and late, and was shown a straight red card. He now faces a three-game ban. His dismissal not only changed this game, but it will be a huge blow to Bournemouth’s hopes of securing European qualification.

From there, it was one-way traffic. Bournemouth sat deep, defending desperately as United laid siege to their goal. Dango Ouattara and Tyler Adams both produced superb blocks to deny Mason Mount and Garnacho, while Marcos Senesi made a crucial intervention to prevent a certain goal for Mount.

Ultimately, United’s pressure told. Højlund, who had gone six games without a goal, diverted Manuel Ugarte’s effort into the net to salvage a point. It was United’s final shot of the match and their 15th in the final 20 minutes. Overall, they registered 25 shots — their highest tally in an away Premier League game since October 2010 against Newcastle.

United’s focus will now shift to their Europa League semi-final against Athletic Club. While the result at the Vitality Stadium won’t significantly alter their league position, it is yet another reminder of the significant task facing Rúben Amorim.
