Who Chris Eubank Jr could fight next, from Canelo Alvarez to Billy Joe Saunders ...Middle East

Chris Eubank Jr declared that he “upheld the family name” after his unanimous decision victory over Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It wasn’t what you would call a classic fight, but on this occasion, it didn’t matter.

Both men showed plenty of heart and courage in a bitter contest that will have made their legendary fathers proud.

After 12 competitive rounds, all three judges ultimately scored it 116-112 in favour of Eubank Jr, who was taken to hospital for checks in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Following his famous win over Benn, thoughts will turn as to who he should face next.

Eubank Jr has spent years chasing a lucrative fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but to no avail. Could Saturday night be the tipping point?

Prior to the fight, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman asserted his belief that the winner deserves a shot at the Mexican.

“Both are ranked, have been highly ranked for many years and are top level in the sport,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports.

“A fight for the championship is doable. Absolutely. Canelo has embarked on a new stage of his career.

“He will fight in Riyadh and is then scheduled to fight in Las Vegas and the winner this Saturday is going to be a major player in boxing worldwide, certainly.”

The only problem is that Canelo is currently scheduled to fight William Scull on 3 May in Saudi Arabia. There has also been talk of him fighting Terence Crawford in a blockbuster clash later this year, which could push Eubank Jr further down the pecking order.

Of course, there are other options out there for Eubank Jr, such as British duo Denzel Bentley and Hamzah Sheeraz, or even Janibek Alimkhanuly, the unified WBO and IBF middleweight champion, who is after a big fight of his own.

Could he settle the score with Saunders?

There is also the possibility of Eubank Jr running it back with long-time rival Billy Joe Saunders.

The pair have history, with Saunders narrowly defeating Eubank Jr via split decision in 2014.

Saunders had been invited by the Benn camp to inspect Eubank Jr’s hand wraps on the night.

But he was denied entry to the Eubank Jr dressing room, where he was involved in a heated confrontation with Eubank Jr’s manager Napper, before being led away by security.

Saunders lost to Canelo in 2021 and has not fought since.

Benn could be granted an instant shot at redemption if he chooses to invoke the rematch clause in his contract.

But his promoter Eddie Hearn hinted that he could return to welterweight, his more natural weight class, after his defeat to Eubank Jr.

“In defeat, he’s become a superstar,” Hearn said.

“We have to think about what we do next, we’ve seen tonight he’s a world-class fighter and can win world titles. We’ve got a rematch up at 160lbs but this kid has an unbelievable future and can be a superstar in this country, filling stadiums.

“I think he can win the rematch but we have to think carefully about what we do because he’s been through an unbelievable amount. I’d like to see him go back to 147lbs and fight for a world title.”

However Benn insisted he wanted to avenge the sole blemish on his record, saying: “It’s a hard one to swallow. I didn’t come into the fight thinking it would be that close.

“I didn’t come in to lose or for anything apart from winning. I want my revenge.

“I didn’t think I lost the fight, but I don’t want to be delusional and say I won the fight.”
