Former Colorado State wide receiver Tory Horton’s next destination is Seattle.
The Seahawks drafted the ex-Ram with the 30th pick of the fifth round (166th overall) on Saturday afternoon. CSU was in the middle of its Green and Gold Spring Showcase when the pick was made, and a graphic was displayed on the Canvas Stadium scoreboard to a roar from the fans in attendance, as well as a round of applause from his former coach.
“I’m just so proud of Tory Horton,” CSU head coach Jay Norvell said. “He’s like a son to me. I told him I was the president of the Tory Horton fan club, so I’m really excited for his next opportunity. He’s worked very hard to get to this point and he told me, ‘Thanks for believing in a 160-pound guy that had no offers.’”
Norvell first coached the Fresno, Calif., native at Nevada. When Norvell took the job at CSU after the 2022 season, Horton came with him.
Although his final season was cut short by a knee injury, Horton still had 2,620 receiving yards at CSU (sixth in program history) as well as 17 receiving touchdowns in his two-plus years as a Ram. He also scored on three punt returns and threw for a touchdown.
Between his time at CSU and Nevada, he had 3,615 receiving yards, which left him 35 yards short of breaking the Mountain West all-time receiving yardage record, held by CSU great Rashard Higgins.
He spent the time between his injury and the draft preparing himself for his next-level opportunity. He showed off how far he has come at the NFL draft combine and a pro day at CSU that was attended by scouts from almost every NFL team.
Seattle turned out to be the team that saw not only Horton’s progress, but also his potential.
“I had a pretty good feeling about Seattle after taking my visit out there,” Horton told CSURams.com. “I felt confident. Now it’s just get to work. There’s nothing else to it. You go out and get ready to get on the team. For sure I have some fuel now. I’m ready. I’ve got to let them know the injury was nothing and I’m ready to compete. I’ll be good by camp.”
He gives the Rams NFL draft picks in back-to-back years for the first time since 2018-19. Edge rusher Mohamed Kamara was also a fifth-round pick by the Dolphins last year. Going back two more years, Horton is the third Ram to be drafted during that time, as tight end Trey McBride was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round in 2022.
Horton is also the fourth CSU wide receiver/tight end to be drafted into the NFL in the past decade, joining Higgins and Michael Gallup, who went on to become playmakers at the next level.
