Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag criticized Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Ravindra Jadeja for his underwhelming batting performance in IPL 2025.
Sehwag stated that Jadeja has a poor strike rate and a lack of responsibility following the MS Dhoni-led team's defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Chepauk Stadium.
The Yellow Army suffered its fourth consecutive home loss. They lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in Chennai on Friday, April 25.
CSK remained at the bottom of the table with just two wins from nine matches. The team is virtually out of the playoff race, and one more loss could end their campaign.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag stated that the CSK players seemed to be eager for the tournament to end. Sehwag called out Ravindra Jadeja for his low strike rate but urged him to stay longer at the crease.
He added that Ravindra Jadeja should have anchored one end, allowing others to play their natural game.
“Their batters are wondering when will they get back home? When will the tournament end? At least one of them should have taken responsibility. Jadeja has got a useless strike rate, but at least try to stay out there till the 15th or 18th over. The rest of the batters can then play around him,” Sehwag said.
Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja Promoted in CSK Batting Order
CSK changed their batting lineup for the match by dropping Rachin Ravindra from the playing XI. Ayush Mhatre opened the innings, but CSK continued to search for a reliable No. 3 batter.
The team experimented with Sam Curran in the No. 3 slot. However, the England all-rounder scored just nine runs off 10 balls.
Ravindra Jadeja was promoted to No. 4 in the batting order, following the failure of the top order. He failed to find momentum, especially against the spinners.
His stay at the crease ended when he was bowled out by Kamindu Mendis in the 10th over. Jadeja managed to score 21 runs off 17 balls, including two fours.
What Sam Curran Is Doing at No.3 in This Line-up - Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag was confused over CSK's decision to send Sam Curran to bat at number 3. He added that the team should have promoted Dewald Brevis, who made his debut for CSK and scored 42 runs off 25 balls.
“I can’t understand what Sam Curran is doing at No.3 in this line-up. He has played up the order for sure; he has batted No.4 in ILT20, and he has played that role intelligently. But, in this line-up, when you have Brevis, play him at No.3. Then Dube can come in next, followed by Jadeja, Sam Curran, and Deepak Hooda,” Sehwag added.
The Men in Yellow are also at risk of missing the playoffs for two consecutive seasons—the first time in league history. They will play their next match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, April 30.
