Shedeur Sanders passed over in second, third rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft

DENVER (KDVR) — Things have taken a sharp turn in a different direction for the University of Colorado Boulder's star quarterback, Shedeur Sanders.

After the second day of the 2025 NFL Draft, which includes the second and third rounds, Sanders has yet to hear his name called by an NFL team.

Once projected to be a top-three pick, connected to the New York Giants at the No. 3 pick, the quarterback has seen his draft stock progressively slip.

His name began to float around No. 10 before being projected to go No. 21 in the final NFL mock draft, then to a late first-round pick and has now yet to be selected through the third round.

Sanders had been linked with the Giants, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders, but the teams all elected to reinforce other positions through the draft, although there were several quarterbacks taken ahead of Sanders, who was initially projected as the second-best prospect at the position behind the No.1 overall pick Cam Ward.

The quarterbacks selected before Sanders include:

Jaxson Dart, Mississippi — New York Giants, Pick 25 Tyler Shough, Louisville — New Orleans Saints, Pick 40 Jalen Milroe, Alabama — Seattle Seahawks, Pick 92 Dillon Gabriel, Oregon — Cleveland Browns, Pick 94

To make a bad thing worse, during the wait, somebody was able to acquire the phone number of Sanders and prank call him, pretending to tell him he was drafted, according to Sports Illustrated.

Sports media, analysts and even the president are nearly flabbergasted by the slide, and are saying that they can't remember the last time a player has seen such a fall off from initial predictions.

With the drop, people are beginning to question what the avenue to the NFL for Sanders may look like.

There is still the possibility he will be selected in the fourth through seventh rounds on Saturday, but many people are wondering if that's the best thing that can happen.

Some sports pundits said he should consider taking fate into his own hands and try to find teams that he believes are a good fit and attempt to impress them in individual practices and trials as a free agent.

Others even brought up the idea of a return to college.

As it stands, since Sanders declared for the draft and participated in the NFL Combine, NCAA rules would make him ineligible for a return.

However, analysts said that in a time where the NCAA rules have been contested so frequently, like with Name, Image and Likeness deals, it might be worth it to challenge the rules, return to college for a final year and give the draft a shot next season.

There have also been discussions on what might have caused his draft stock to decrease.

Sports Illustrated said scouts had initial skepticism about his size and arm strength, but that did not seem to play a part in his previous draft rankings. Commentary suggests that such a heavy spotlight following the son of the Hall of Fame NFL player Deion Sanders may be a contributing factor to the drop, according to the New York Times.

Sanders' camp may be having internal discussions about his future with the last day of the draft taking place on Saturday morning.
