Rally in Ukiah Thursday to protest threats to Social Security

A group rallied near the Ukiah Social Security Office Thursday afternoon to protest recent threats to the federal agency, standing along South Orchard Avenue with signs proclaiming: “Hands Off, I paid for it!” and “Save Social Security.”

“We know that one in five Americans currently rely on social security benefits to live independently due to disabilities or to retire comfortably,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D – San Rafael) reported in a press release earlier this month. “Right now, nearly every American contributes to Social Security and hopes to be able to utilize it one day for future assistance. But Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s half-baked approach and headstrong rush to irresponsibly cut trillions of dollars from the federal budget — without oversight or full consideration of the impacts — puts everyday Americans’ lifesaving and hard-earned benefits in danger. Every American should be able to live and plan for retirement without the fear that the benefits that they earned are under threat, and I won’t stop fighting to make that happen.”

In the press release, Huffman reported that he and Rep. Mike Thompson, a fellow Democrat who represents California’s Fourth District, recently hosted a “roundtable to discuss the devastating impacts of Trump and Musk’s Social Security cuts for local communities. Reps. Thompson and Huffman were joined by beneficiaries, critical service providers, government agencies and local economic leaders to discuss the importance of defending Social Security and to share their work to protect these benefits for seniors and people with disabilities.”

“Americans worked hard to earn their Social Security and deserve the peace of mind that comes from their benefits are secure,” Rep. Thompson is quoted as saying in the release. “It’s the most reliable government program that not only ensures people can retire with dignity and people with disability can live as independently as possible, but also supports our local economy. Elon Musk’s DOGE and the Administration are putting benefits at risk, but I will continue to work to hold them accountable and defend and protect Social Security.”

Recently, however, Huffman explains, “Social Security Administration Acting Commissioner Leland Dudek has laid off thousands of employees, closed offices, introduced requirements for users to verify their identity online, and more. These layoffs and policy changes have disrupted critical services by creating inefficient call-in services, a malfunctioning website, and longer wait times.”

To help protect “Social Security benefits for seniors and people with disabilities,” Reps. Huffman and Thompson reported that they have co-sponsored bills including “H.R. 1876, Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act, which prohibits any more closures of SSA field offices for the rest of this administration.”

According to the House of Representative website, H.R. 1876 was introduced on March 5, 20025, and “Referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means” on the same day, which is the last action reported.

The representatives also report co-sponsoring “H.R. 1877, Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act, which blocks DOGE and political appointees from accessing sensitive beneficiary data systems at SSA. It also strengthens oversight and civil penalties for any data privacy and disclosure violations, (and that they) have also supported legislation to make proactive improvements to Social Security benefits for the American people – including Rep. John Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act to raise benefits, cut taxes, and prevent seniors from retiring into poverty.”
