Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn rules: Weight class, hydration clause and round details for eagerly-awaited clash

This weekend sees one of the most anticipated fights of recent years as Chris Eubank Jr takes on Conor Benn.

The Eubank–Benn rivalry extends back to when their fathers were fighting, and with Nigel and Chris Senior retired, the sons have taken it on.

Fireworks are expected when Eubank Junior takes on BennGetty

This fight has been a long time in the making, and it is controversial in a number of ways.

Eubank Jr and Benn were initially meant to meet in October 2022, but a failed drugs test from ‘The Destroyer’ ended those hopes and led to a ban.

Benn insisted he did nothing wrong and blamed the positive test on eggs, and eventually, he was cleared.

There were also concerns from Eubank Sr over the weight class the bout would take place in.

And he might be right to have those concerns, given he was slapped with a £375,000 fine for just missing the catchweight.

Here, talkSPORT.com looks into all of the rules and regulations around this contest…

    Eubank Jr vs Benn: Rules

This grudge match is set to take place over 12 rounds.

Each round will be three minutes, and the fight can be ended by knockout or technical knockout.

A technical knockout involves the referee deciding to wave things off, or if the fighter’s corner throws the towel into the ring.

In the event of the fight lasting all 12 rounds, the winner will be decided by the judges.

There are three judges, and they each award ten points to the winner of each round.

If there is a knockdown, that takes a point off.

If all judges grant higher scores to one fighter, the win is awarded unanimously. If it’s a split, the winner is whoever gets the better score from two of the judges.

A draw can happen if all judges score the same or if two judges decide differently on the winner, and the other scores it a draw.

Chris Eubank Jr vs Benn: Weight

This contest is set to be held in the middleweight class, which is Eubank Jr’s natural weight division, though he has fought higher.

But for Benn, it is a big step up, with the Englishman jumping two weight divisions to take on his rival.

The catchweight for the fight is 160 pounds, with the hydration clause taking that up to 170.

That means that despite missing weight, the fight isn’t in danger of being cancelled.

In the initial contest, it was Eubank Jr who was going to drop down to welterweight, which sparked concerns from his father.

Eubank Sr is unlikely to be in attendance on SaturdayGetty

And Eubank Sr is still worried about the safety of both men.

Speaking at a charity walk for Michael Watson, who suffered brain damage in 1991 when he fought Eubank Senior, he said: “Those rules are in place to keep you safe and keep my son safe from ending up from what Michael Watson is having to endure.

“We can’t have any more Michael Watsons. He is the people’s champion.”

In a further interview, he said: “He won’t listen to me. He is looking at all the money.

“My son will not listen. For him, he’s being drawn into the however many millions, the money he’s being paid.”
