Authorities on Thursday released the identity of a man who was fatally shot, along with the names of the Chula Vista police personnel who fired upon him last weekend.
Carlos Enriquez, 56, allegedly pointed a gun at the agent and two officers outside a Bonita home in the 1400 block of Country Vistas Lane early Saturday.
Chula Vista Police Department Agent Thomas Luhta and Officers Roman Buyson and Alfonso Perdomo opened fire on Enriquez with their service rifles.
Luhta has been with the department the longest, 11 years. Buyson and Perdomo have been on the job in Chula Vista for 5 and 7 years, respectively. They are all part of the CVPD’s Patrol Division.
The San Diego Police Department released the update because SDPD detectives investigate shootings by the CVPD under the terms of a countywide agreement meant to prevent conflicts of interest.
The events that led to the fatal shooting began in the pre-dawn hours when police learned of a domestic disturbance in the neighborhood.
When patrol officers arrived, family members who had exited the home told them Enriquez was inside and had access to guns, according to the SDPD. Chula Vista police called in backup, including an armored vehicle and a surveillance drone.
While officers stood in front of the house, Enriquez came outside with his hands in his pockets and they told him to put them in the air. But the suspect only removed his hands from his pockets, dropping a firearm on the steps leading to the residence.
Police ordered Enriquez to walk away from the handgun, but he instead sat down and allegedly retrieved the weapon, placing it in his lap. Officers then shot the suspect with a beanbag shotgun, causing him to fall backward and drop the gun.
The officers continued to give him commands, but he picked the gun up and pointed it in the direction of the officers as he began to sit up, prompting them to open fire.
Officers found a second handgun in the downed suspect’s waistband. Medics took Enriquez to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
