Weston Edmunds has announced his candidacy for the Greeley-Evans School District 6 Board of Education.
If elected, Edmunds said his first priority would be to “fight for these students and their families.” This could include helping fill more backpacks with school supplies in August, ensuring nutrition programs receive funding and support, strengthening the Career and Technical Education Center and advocating for community partnerships that can supply resources to children.
“I want to make sure every student has the support necessary to be college and career-ready,” he wrote in a news release announcing his candidacy.
Edmunds, a 39-year-old Greeley native with deep community ties, wants to bring “his wealth of experience and passion” to the board. In his announcement, he praised the current board and Superintendent Deirdre Pilch’s teamwork to advance the school district by improving school facilities, updating curriculum and approving the new CTE Center.
“This board has helped place District 6 on a strong path forward,” Edmunds wrote in the release. “I’m running to help keep that momentum going. I want to promote the current vision and help further the work of this Superintendent and Board of Education so that District 6 is a place where every student has the tools they need to succeed — regardless of ethnicity, gender, social status, or household income.”
Edmunds feels his 11 years of employment at the Weld Food Bank, where he has served as a volunteer coordinator and now director of marketing and communications, gives him a unique perspective on the challenges families face in the community, especially those who struggle with self-sufficiency.
“Not every child comes from a home that can afford reliable internet, new school supplies, regular nutritious meals or even comfortable shoes,” he wrote. “These students often don’t have the same opportunities to succeed as their classmates.”
Edmunds and his wife have three children who attend District 6, two at Fred Tjardes School of Innovation and one at Early College Academy.
Edmunds becomes the fourth District 6 resident to file for candidacy in the school board race — with others including incumbent Kyle Bentley, Deana Lemos-Garcia and Robyn Roggy. Four out of the seven current District 6 board members’ terms will expire in November.
