Tennessee safety Jakobe Thomas is entering the transfer portal, according to a report.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to break that news on Thursday morning. Thomas spent 1 season with the Volunteers after beginning his career at Middle Tennessee State. He will be looking to play his final season of college eligibility elsewhere, however.

This is a surprising move, as Thomas has been widely projected as a starting safety for the Vols this spring. At this time, it’s unclear if he’s leaving because he was passed up on the depth chart or if he’s leaving for some other reason.
Last season, Thomas recorded 23 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 2 pass deflections. According to Pro Football Focus, Thomas played 263 defensive snaps last season, which was the third-most on the team amongst safeties. With Will Brooks moving on this offseason, Thomas was expected to be an even bigger contributor this fall in Tennessee’s secondary.
With Thomas looking elsewhere, the Vols do have the option of bringing in another safety transfer to replace him. So far this offseason, the Vols have been relatively quiet in the transfer portal beyond landing quarterback Joey Aguilar. The Vols have 5 transfer commitments so far in 2025, none of whom play defensive back.
