Citing a pattern of discrimination and endangering immigrants, El Cajon residents officially launched a recall campaign against council member Phil Ortiz on Tuesday.
The Recall Committee of Phil Ortiz campaign made the announcement at the El Cajon City Council meeting, where dozens of people spoke in favor of recalling Ortiz.
A handful of people also spoke in his support.
The committee said Ortiz, an evangelical pastor at Foothills Christian Church, ran unopposed and won with only a few thousand votes.
“In one of the first votes of the council in January 2025 he joined the ultra-republican Mayor Bill Wells who promised Tom Homan the so-called Czar of the border and who is in charge of Donald Trump to deport all undocumented Latino immigrants, especially in the states of Texas and California,” said the official recall website.
“This resolution contravenes California Law SB 54, which prevents local police from helping federal immigration authorities detain immigrants solely because of the color of their skin.”
Per the California secretary of state’s website, the number of signatures gathered must be equal in number to “not less than 15%” of registered voters in the city of El Cajon, as the number of total registered voters there in the city is more than 50,000 but less than 100,000.
There are currently 54,382 registered voters in El Cajon.
Ortiz was elected in 2024. His term is over in December.
