(KRON) -- The Primary School, which operates two tuition-free schools in the Bay Area and is financially backed by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, will be closing down at the end of the 2025-26 school year. The Primary School has schools serving students in East Palo Alto and in the East Bay.
The school was founded in 2016 by the Meta founder's wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, a pediatrician. The schools were backed financially by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and took an integrated approach to education involving parents, educators, and health providers.
"After much deliberation, our schools in East Palo Alto and the East Bay will be closing at the end of the 2025-26 school year," the Primary School said in a post on its website. "This was a very difficult decision, and we are committed to ensuring a thoughtful and supportive transition for students and families over the next year."
SF school district to announce cuts amid budget shortfallwent on to say that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative would be making a $50 million investment in the coming years to the East Palo Alto, Belle Haven and East Bay communities. The investment would go toward 529 education savings plans for students to "support their future learning," and transition specialists and support for families as they transition to new schools.
"In the East Bay, we will be supporting children and families to access preschool and kindergarten options in the community. In East Palo Alto, where the Primary School has worked closely with Ravenswood City School District since our founding, we will continue to collaborate as the District welcomes many of our families," the school said.
The East Palo Alto school serves over 400 students, offering preschool through sixth grade. The Primary School's East Bay facility offered early family foundation and preschool programs for children ages 1 through 4.
The school did not offer any specific reason for the closure.
