Former child star Sophie Nyweide has died at the age of 24, her family announced in an online obituary.
Nyweide died on Monday, April 14. The obituary does not specifically mention the cause of death, but it does go into the "struggles and traumas" Nyweide endured in her life.
"Sophie was a kind and trusting girl. Often this left her open to being taken advantage of by others. She wrote and drew voraciously and much of this art depicts the depth she had and it also represents the pain she suffered. Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas. Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses, and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her are heartbroken their efforts couldn't save her from her fate," the obituary reads.
It continues, "She self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death. She repeatedly said she would 'handle it' on her own and was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life.
"Sophie. A life ended too soon. May it not be in vain. May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better. Yes, we must all protect our children and do better."
Nyweide was born July 8, 2000 in Burlington, Vermont. She appeared in the films Margot at the Wedding with Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh, An Invisible Sign with Jessica Alba, Shadows & Lies with James Franco and Mammoth, where she played Michelle Williams' daughter. Nyweide also appeared in several other films, and episodes of Law & Order and What Would You Do?.
The obituary says that Nyweide always dreamed of becoming an actor and was "happiest on a movie set."
In a 2010 interview with the Manchester Journal, Nyweide said that getting to act opposite Williams "was amazing."
"She really set a good example for me. She also gave me tips on acting," said Nyweide of working with Williams. "She gives me a lot of helpful tips and pointers. How you can get into your character like doing it into a mirror or doing it by yourself, practicing it over and over again to get [it] right, to try it different ways and see how you feel it's right."
