‘Need to pay it off’ – Tampa Bay Rays selling destroyed Tropicana Stadium roof for $15 after hurricane carnage

THE Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly selling pieces of their Tropicana Field roof after the structure was destroyed by Hurricane Milton last year.

It’s been revealed that fans will be able to purchase each part of the MLB stadium’s roof for $15.

New York Yankees writer Bryan Hoch revealed that the Tampa Bay Rays are selling Tropicana Field roof parts for $15 a piece AFPTropicana Field was torn open due to Hurricane Milton in St. Petersburg, Florida, last October[/caption]

Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm that hit Florida’s Gulf Coast last October, severely damaged Tropicana Field’s roof.

The high winds took out large sections of the Teflon-coated fiberglass roof and caused debris to scatter across the field.

Due to Hurricane Milton’s destruction of Tropicana Field, the Rays are playing their 2025 home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, the home of the New York Yankees’ spring training facility.

The Bronx Bombers played the Rays over the weekend, and MLB.com writer Bryan Hoch revealed on X that the Tampa franchise is selling remnants of the roof for $15 at the GMS Field.

The Yankees writer added that he even bought a roof part and posted a snap of the piece.

“Had to do it! I’m now the proud owner of a piece of Tropicana Field roof!” Hoch wrote.

The photo also showed a sign that read that proceeds from the items will benefit the Rays Baseball Foundation.

But MLB fans reacted to the selling of the team’s damaged stadium roof pieces as some mocked the small-market team for the decision.

“Why must teams make a profit off everything,” one wrote.

“Haha the Rays will do anything to raise a few bucks,” another commented.

“Guess they gotta pay that Steinbrenner field rent somehow!

Still, fans can purchase each piece for $15, which is a lot less when compared to eBay users who got pieces from the site shortly after the storm and listed them online for over $150.

And the proceeds will go to the Rays Baseball Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of those in need within our community, focusing primarily on education, youth development, wellness, and social responsibility, per the MLB team’s website.

As for what’s next for the Rays, the St. Petersburg City Council approved $22.5 million to start work on repairing the stadium’s roof.

The plan is for the project to be completed by the Rays’ 2026 season.

The Rays hope to play at Tropicana Field in 2026 after the project is complete.

The Tropicana Field repairs are estimated to cost $55.7 million, per an assessment report.

The Rays are expected to play at Tropicana Field for three more seasons after it’s repaired through 2028, thanks to a current contract with the city of Tampa.

The Yankees will receive about $15 million in revenue for hosting the Rays.
