John Lithgow Shares Honest Opinion On Harry Potter Casting Controversy

It's a natural part of life to question and closely scrutinize every aspect of a remake, most especially in the case of a series as universally beloved as Harry Potter.

As HBO gets underway with newfound production details about its upcoming series, John Lithgow has provided his own take on the casting announcements that have practically broken the Internet.

With further details beginning to emerge about the highly anticipated TV remake, HBO has since revealed key casting decisions for some of the series' most notable characters. Janet McTeer of Tumbleweed, for example, will appear as Professor Minerva McGonagall; I May Destroy You's Paapa Essiedu will portray Professor Severus Snape;and Shaun of the Dead's Nick Frost is set to play the lovably scruffy groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid.

As noteworthy as these casting announcements have been, perhaps the biggest piece of news came with the confirmation that John Lithgow will appear as Hogwarts' legendary headmaster, Albus Dumbledore (previously portrayed by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon).

While some fans have voiced their enthusiasm for the casting of the 79-year-old Lithgow, others have expressed skepticism at the Golden Globe winner's upcoming role in the series.

"I know there were plenty of people appalled that an American should be hired to play the ultimate English wizard," Lithgow told BBC's The One Show. "But I will do my best."

As further proof of his suitability for the role, Lithgow also mentioned his past acting credentials in series like The Crown -- a series firmly rooted in British culture.

"I'm not an Englishman, although I’ve played one on TV. I remind everyone that I did play Winston Churchill on The Crown and did just fine," Lithgow commented.

Lithgow has also mentioned that he's currently brushing up on his Harry Potter knowledge by reading the books, allowing him a deeper window into J.K. Rowling's sprawling fantasy universe.
