This spring, Southwestern College is breaking new ground as students from two standout programs compete nationally against top-tier universities across North America. In a powerful display of innovation, resilience, and Jaguar pride, teams from SWC’s automotive engineering and architecture departments are set to represent the only community college competing in two prestigious, design-focused national challenges.
From April 25 to 27, three teams of architecture students will participate in the highly respected 2025 Design Village Competition at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Twenty-one students will design, build, and live in temporary structures—carried entirely by hand to Cal Poly’s Architectural Experimental Laboratory—for a 48-hour immersive experience.
The competition pushes students to bring their blueprints to life, testing their structural creativity and livability within the framework of Cal Poly’s iconic “Learn-by-Doing” philosophy.
Design Village, hosted by Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design and has long served as a rite of passage for aspiring designers. Southwestern College’s involvement offers community college students a platform to showcase their design skills alongside peers from some of the country’s leading architecture programs.
From May 1–4, SWC’s Jag Racing team will head to Marana, Arizona, to compete in the elite Baja SAE off-road engineering competition. They’ll be the only community college among the 72 registered collegiate teams, which include Cornell, UCLA, Virginia Tech, and Purdue.
The 34-member team—made up of students from automotive technology, engineering, and business—has spent the past year designing, building, and rigorously testing a custom all-terrain vehicle. Through this challenge, students gain hands-on experience in engineering design, manufacturing, and project management.
The Jag Racing team is part of Southwestern’s MESA program, which supports underrepresented students pursuing careers in STEM fields.
