Pope Francis Dead: King Charles, The White House and More Pay Tribute

The world is paying tribute to Pope Francisfollowing the news of his death.

The Pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died during the early morning hours of Monday, April 21, around 7:30 a.m. local time, according to a statement from the Vatican. He was 88.

    A cause of death has not yet been provided, but in the weeks prior, he had been hospitalized for 38 days while battling complications related to pneumonia. Though he appeared to be in good spirits during Easter services on Sunday, April 20.

    The Pope's sudden death shocked people across the world, with several global leaders paying tribute his life and legacy with kind remarks, includingKing Charles, who wrote in a statement: "My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis."

    "His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith, and to those of goodwill who work for the benefit of others," it added in part.

    "Deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Holiness Pope Francis," British Prime Minister Keir Starmeradded. "His tireless efforts to promote a world that is fairer for all will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I share my sincerest condolences to the whole Catholic Church."

    The official X (formerly Twitter) account for The White House shared two side-by-side photos–one of Francis with President Trump and First Lady Melania and another of Vice President JD Vance and the Pope–with the simple caption: "Rest in Peace, Pope Francis."

    came shortly after Vance posted his own tribute, writing in a X post, "I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul."

    Micheál Martin, Ireland’s taoiseach, also shared a lengthy statement about the "profound sadness" in the wake of the Pope's death, celebrating Francis’ “long and distinguished papacy” and “unwavering commitment to the principles of compassion, peace, and human dignity."

    "He spoke out for the poor, the marginalised, and the oppressed. His solidarity with refugees, his calls for climate action, and his insistence on global peace and equality set him apart as a champion of justice in the modern world,” Martin added.

    Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, said “Europe mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis," in a post on X. "His contagious smile captured millions of people’s hearts across the globe. ‘The People’s Pope’ will be remembered for his love for life, hope for peace, compassion for equality & social justice.”

    Narendra Modi, India’s Prime Minister, also posted a message on X, which included a photo of the politicial figure posing with Francis. "Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis," Modi wrote. "I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace."
