Leicester City have finally been put out of their misery with their relegation from the Premier League being confirmed after defeat to Liverpool.
The Foxes have dropped down to the Championship after just one season back in the Premier League with five matches to go.
Their fate was confirmed on Sunday following their defeat at home to Liverpool and results picked up by their relegation rivals West Ham and Wolves this weekend.
West Ham, who sit in 16th spot, drew 1-1 at home on Saturday to already relegated Southampton.
As for Wolves in 17th, they have extended their lead over Leicester in 19th to 20 points by beating Manchester United at Old Trafford in Sunday’s 2pm kick-off.
Leicester needed to beat champions-elect Liverpool at the King Power Stadium to stay alive but failed to manage that as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Reds – the returning Trent Alexander-Arnold scoring the winner.
The uninspiring contest was decided on 76 minutes when Alexander-Arnold fired the ball through a crowd after Liverpool hit the woodwork twice following a corner.
Leicester may feel hard done by that they didn’t go in front earlier in the second half when Conor Coady bundled the ball in, however, the goal wasn’t awarded with referee Stuart Atwell adjudging Patson Daka to have fouled Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in the build-up.
Liverpool now need just one more win to seal their second Premier League crown, and 20th league title overall.
They can seal the title when they face Tottenham at Anfield next Sunday, or if Arsenal are beaten at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.
In a blow to Leicester fans, their relegation was effectively confirmed just before they took to the pitch at the King Power Stadium against the Reds.
Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s side are in the midst of a ten-game winless run and have picked up just one victory – a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur – in their last 18 fixtures.
Leicester did well to frustrate Liverpool for long periods of the game but it’s been a poor season for themGetty Wolves confirmed their Premier League status for another season with a win at Man United earlier on SundayGettyMeanwhile, Leicester become the first side in top-flight history to go nine consecutive home games without scoring a goal.
In Football League history across all divisions, only Mansfield (9 in third tier between August and December 1971) and Wolves (10 in second tier between December 1984 and April 1985) have achieved this unwanted feat.
Wolves confirmed their Premier League status for next term with a surprise 1-0 triumph at Old Trafford.
The decisive goal saw Pablo Sarabia curl in a beautiful free-kick with his left boot to ensure they’re an unassailable 17 points ahead of Ipswich with five games to go.
West Ham are as good as safe with a 15-point cushion and superior goal difference on Ipswich but will be disappointed with their result at the weekend, as their draw saw Saints earn just their 11th point of the season.
Jarrod Bowen put the Hammers in front but a stoppage-time strike from Lesley Ugochukwu saw the spoils get shared.
Ipswich are destined to join Southampton and Leicester in the ChampionshipGettyThe result sparked an almighty post-match rant from West Ham forward Niclas Fullkrug.
Ipswich aren’t down yet but failure to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park next Saturday will confirm their relegation.
