Josh Hazlewood attacks RCB teammates with slow learners jab after crushing defeat at home vs PBKS

Josh Hazlewood blamed the batters and repeated mistakes for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) third defeat in a row at home in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru suffered a five-wicket loss to Punjab Kings in a rain-shortened 14-over clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

After Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s crushing defeat against the Punjab Kings on Friday (April 18), Josh Hazlewood pointed out that the pitch at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium didn’t behave like it usually does, lacking its trademark consistent bounce and making life tough for the batters.

The RCB pacer also admitted that the team failed to learn from their earlier losses against the Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals at the same venue. RCB’s top order crumbled once again, especially during the powerplay, as the bowlers didn’t have too much to defend against the PBKS.

Hazlewood has openly attacked the RCB for failing to adjust and apply their lessons from previous matches, as it cost them dearly in those crucial first six to eight overs against the Punjab Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

He also took a brutal dig at the RCB by saying that they are too slow to learn from their previous mistakes. Notably, Josh returned with the brilliant spell of 3/14 in three overs against Punjab but could not save the side from facing its third consecutive defeat at home in the ongoing IPL 2025.

We've probably been a bit slow on the learnings: Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood said in the post-match press conference, “Yeah, I think it's not a typical Chinnaswamy wicket. Obviously, the bounce has always been there, but in past years, it's probably been more consistent. Yeah, it's obviously three (defeats) in a row now at home.

It's just we've probably been a bit slow on the learnings from the first two games and didn't put that into practice as well as we could have, probably in those first probably six to eight overs, obviously, with the score the way it was.”

However, Hazlewood remained hopeful that Royal Challengers Bengaluru would turn things around soon. The star pacer explained, “But we'll dive into this game and, you know, probably more so when we get back to Bangalore and really go through it in detail and with a fine-tooth comb and come up with a few ideas of where we can learn and improve.”

The Australian pacer added, “I think the bowling definitely improved from the last two outings. So, sort of, we're slowly getting there, but probably not quickly enough.”

At the end, Hazlewood advised his Challengers Bengaluru teammates to stay calm and read the conditions before going for big shots. He felt that if RCB’s top-order batters could stay longer at the crease and build partnerships, it would greatly improve their chances of winning the matches both at home and away in the ongoing IPL 2025.

He signed off by saying, “So if we can have our top five, top six doing the batting for the 20 overs, I think that'll go a long way to helping us win.” Notably, they will again face PBKS in their next IPL 2025 match on April 20 in Chandigarh.
