Weather changes Northern Colorado softball series against Portland State

Inclement weather, precipitation and colder temperatures Friday, has altered the University of Northern Colorado’s final Big Sky Conference home series of the regular season this weekend.

The Bears, 3-6 in the Big Sky Conference and 12-27 overall, will host Portland State for a doubleheader on Saturday at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley. The games are scheduled to start at noon and 2:30 p.m., respectively.

The UNC program will retire Lou Piel’s jersey before the first game. Senior day festivities will be held after the second game.

The teams were originally scheduled to play a 3-game series Friday and Saturday with a doubleheader Friday and a single game starting at noon Saturday.

Piel, the director of player development and video analysis for the softball team, is a former standout UNC pitcher and member of U.S.-level teams in the 1980s. Piel threw five no-hitters and recorded 17 shutouts with a 48-7 record at UNC.

She coached at the University of South Carolina from 1983-86, leading the Gamecocks to top 10 national rankings and an appearance in the College World Series.
