Inclement weather, precipitation and colder temperatures Friday, has altered the University of Northern Colorado’s final Big Sky Conference home series of the regular season this weekend.
The Bears, 3-6 in the Big Sky Conference and 12-27 overall, will host Portland State for a doubleheader on Saturday at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley. The games are scheduled to start at noon and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
The UNC program will retire Lou Piel’s jersey before the first game. Senior day festivities will be held after the second game.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a 3-game series Friday and Saturday with a doubleheader Friday and a single game starting at noon Saturday.
Piel, the director of player development and video analysis for the softball team, is a former standout UNC pitcher and member of U.S.-level teams in the 1980s. Piel threw five no-hitters and recorded 17 shutouts with a 48-7 record at UNC.
She coached at the University of South Carolina from 1983-86, leading the Gamecocks to top 10 national rankings and an appearance in the College World Series.
