Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has shared his take on Rohit Sharma's poor form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He said that had there been someone other than him, he would've been dropped from the team.
Mumbai Indians batter Rohit Sharma is having a terrible time with the bat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The India skipper has struggled to get going in the league and has faced a lot of criticism for his poor returns.
Rohit has looked far from his best in the IPL 2025. The batter has attempted to play the attacking brand of cricket right from the ball one, but that hasn't worked for him at all. The opening batter looked in good touch in the most recent game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the same story unfolded for him.
Rohit slammed three brilliant sixes, and it seemed that he would finally register a big score. But that wasn't the case as he was back in the hut after scoring just 25 runs. Overall, in the six matches that he has played, he has scored just 82 runs at an average of 13.66.
Mayank Agarwal was dropped on many occasions with better numbers - Simon Doull
Talking about his poor form, Simon Doull cited the example of Mayank Agarwal, citing how the batter was dropped despite having good numbers. He stressed that if he weren't Rohit Sharma, he would've been dropped. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he said:
"If those numbers were Joe Smith, he wouldn't be playing. Any other player, opening the batting in this competition, like Mayank Agarwal, was dropped on many occasions with better numbers than that over 35 games.
"So, if he wasn't Rohit Sharma, he probably wouldn't be playing. But they still know the ability he has and they hope that at some stage through this tournament, that clicks."
There are a lot of players that have had better IPLs than Rohit Sharma - Simon Doull
Simon Doull talked about the campaign of the Mumbai Indians, saying that they need to win. But he was quick to quip that if the team struggles to win and Rohit Sharma is not performing, then it becomes an issue for the team. He also lauded the senior batter for his captaincy. He added:
"They need to keep winning though. If they are not winning and he is not performing, then it becomes a bit of an issue for the team. That's one of the keys. He's such a talented player. We know how good he is.
"We know what he has done in an Indian shirt. There are a lot of players that have had better IPLs than Rohit Sharma. But from a captaincy point of view, he has been simply phenomenal. And he has held that team together for five titles."
Mumbai Indians will be next seen in action when they take on Chennai Super Kings in their next match on 20th April. Rohit will be keen to stage a comeback and help his team win.
