Reisdents can learn how to publish their own books, use technology to bolster a literary career and more at a free conference in Carson geared toward Black writers of all ages.
The Black Writers On Tour 29th Annual Book Conference, Business and Tech Expo is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the Carson Event Center, 801 E. Carson St.
Black Writers on Tour is a nonprofit that works to educate black writers of all ages, according to its website, promote and support them in their literary careers, preserve African American culture by helping them tell their own stories and increase literary awareness among African American people, encouraging more of them to embrace the literary arts.
With the organization’s since-inception core value of “literacy is everybody’s business; who will tell our story?,” Black Writers on Tour founder Rosie Milligan said that it’s especially important currently for African American people to share their own experiences through writing.
“It’s more critical now that we tell our stories than ever before,” Milligan said. “There appears to be a movement to erase historical and cultural information about African Americans (through) banning books in schools and (getting rid of) DEI” policies.
Many people’s voices are often never heard, she added, because they cannot pen it.
“We must tell our story because it’s authentic,” Milligan said. “We do have a rich history and culture; I believe if our children can see it, they can be it.”
Another one of the organization’s goals is to bridge the digital divide among African American children and adults by preparing youth for the burgeoning tech sector, she added, as artificial intelligence continues to speed up information technology.
Sessions at the conference will include:
