Highland High School Principal Kelsey Bailey will resign at the end of the school year.
Her departure presents the opportunity to restructure leadership as the Weld RE-9 School District prepares to open a new K-8 school in 2027.
Interim Superintendent Karen Trusler proposed three administrative restructuring recommendations to the Weld RE-9 Board of Education for the 2025-26 school year, according to an early Monday morning social media post from Weld RE-9. The board will decide whether they want to adopt these recommendations after a presentation from Trusler at the April 22 board meeting.
“I appreciate her years of service to our community and wish her the best,” Trusler said about Bailey in the post. “I have carefully considered how best to adapt to this transition while maintaining efficiency, effectiveness and safety.”
After reviewing enrollment patterns, current needs and forthcoming changes like a new K-8 building, Trusler suggests administrative role adjustments, hiring a middle school assistant principal and support for transitioning into the new building.
Since Highland High School and Highland Middle School share a campus, Trusler recommends expanding the middle school principal’s responsibilities to include students in grades 9-12. This would mean Principal Clay Naughton would serve as the chief administrator for all 500 students, instead of about 240 middle schoolers.
He would have support from the high school assistant principal, but the adjustment would require hiring a middle school assistant principal for the 2025-2026 school year to ensure “streamlined leadership and continued support for our students, staff and families,” Trusler said in the post.
Weld RE-9 would post the middle school assistant principal role internally first, according to Trusler, in hopes of finding a qualified candidate who already understands the school’s culture and community. The role will open externally if needed.
In addition to two assistant principals under Naughton, both schools would have one athletic director for the next school year, per Trusler’s recommendation.
Trusler will serve as interim superintendent for the remainder of the school year before Andy Lavier takes over on July 1.
Trusler foresees more shifts in administrative responsibilities when the new K-8 building opens in 2027.

In preparation for the opening, Moylett will begin working closely with middle school staff, students and families.
“Both Mr. Naughton and Mrs. Moylett have consistently demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to student success,” Trusler wrote in the post. “As outstanding administrators, they will help us navigate the transition smoothly, especially with the upcoming change with superintendent district leadership.”
