A pastor from Maryville, Tennessee, was rescued earlier this week after being kidnapped and held as a prisoner for nearly a week in South Africa. Following a firefight that resulted in the deaths of 3 kidnappers and the pastor’s rescue, the East Tennessee native was focused on the transfer portal entry of former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
According to a report from WVLT 8 in Tennessee, the pastor, Josh Sullivan, was “upset over Nico.”
A fellow pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church, Tom Hatley, told WVLT that people were asked to talk about more lighthearted things after Sullivan was returned to safety. That led some in South Africa to talk SEC football. Sullivan, a lifelong Vols fan, was said to be disappointed.
“Hey, the boy was raised in East Tennessee, what can I tell you?” Hatley told WVLT. “If Josh Heupel is listening to me or the athletic director, Danny White, let’s get this man in to see the team, let’s let him run through the T, let’s do something because he deserves it.”
Sullivan was kidnapped at gunpoint while preaching a sermon in a South African church on April 10. Sullivan was found “miraculously” unharmed in a safe house, according to a report from NBC. No motive was announced for the abduction.
News of Iamaleava’s split with Tennessee broke last weekend, when a no-show at a practice proved to be the tipping point. In the aftermath of the split, fans burned his jersey. Heupel has been praised for his handling of the situation by some and sharply criticized by others.
Iamaleava was a massive recruit for Tennessee when he signed in the 2023 class. He was ranked as the No. 3 overall recruit in his class by the industry-generated 247 Composite. But Heupel said following the split that no 1 player was bigger than the Block T.
And Sullivan’s adventure over the last week shows just how important that Block T is.
